Child Abuse and Self-Harm

A large, recent study from Germany examined the relationship between childhood abuse and later non-suicidal self injury (NSSI), also known as self-harm. Using measures of childhood abuse, self-harm, depression, and anxiety in a sample of 2498 people, they discovered some interesting relationships:

  • Emotional neglect was directly related to later self harm
  • Emotional abuse was related to later self harm, but partially mediated by depression and anxiety
  • Physical and sexual abuse was related to later self harm, completely mediated by depression and anxiety
