Compulsive buying and shopping can result from a variety of motivations, including depression, mania, substance use, OCD, materialism, or impulsivity. Compulsive buying is not an effective way to treat depression, as any relief is temporary and tends to encourage a cycle of more buying until that too because a major problem.
