What determines whether an underage persons will abstain from drinking alcohol? One recent study of American Indian teens identified three significant factors related to alcohol abstinence. First, school adjustment was positively related to abstinence. School adjustment refers to a person's comfortability in the role of student, encompassing academic performance, motivation, social support, and related factors. Second, smoking cigarettes was negatively related to abstinence. Finally, and unsurprisingly, peer drinking was negatively related to abstinence.
